Last month of Rarified framing!

Hi everyone,

I'm writing to let you know that this will be the last month of Rarified as a framing business.

I am moving on to my design label Samitomoto and the Samitomoto drawing game full time from mid May 2011. I will be taking in last framing orders for the next two weeks if you would love my design eye to elevate your art!

As a result I have all the framing equipment for sale, enough to set up a small shop or home studio for $6000.

I'm also selling the gorgeous she-oak counter from Rarified for offers above $2000, it is a lovely collector's piece.

I will no longer be running the Rarified email list, so if you'd like to sign up to the Samitomoto email list and stay in touch, please do so here.

I'd like to say a BIG thank you to all of you for supporting me through the six years of Rarified the shop and one year of transitioning between entrepreneurial projects! So many of you have become close friends and I'm so grateful for your support of Rarified and I over the years!

Hi All,

It's been an amazing four months since Rarified Dickson closed its doors.

I am loving the personal feel of running my framing design studio from home and am thrilled that you have kept the support in Rarified and I very strong!

Please know that every dollar you spend at Rarified goes back into building my new design label Samitomoto, which in turns helps create products that help people to have more creative fun! So it's an amazing joint project and I truly appreciate you all helping me to move forward in this new journey!

Samitomoto Drawing Game

As part of my new design label Samitomoto, I have been busy developing a drawing game!

The Samitomoto Drawing Game is launching on the 16th December 2010. It is a fun, non competitive card game designed to help you to have creative fun drawing and to get into creative flow. It is designed for creative spirits from 8-80 years old!

My new design label Samitomoto is all about sparking creative fun and inspiration!

It's core is a range of funky and sleek magnetic vision boards that I've designed and manufactured.

The 30 x 60 cm magnet boards retail for $75 each, they are made from powder coated zinc. They are also available in 60 x 90 cm. Using colour when framing

This is a simply delightful framing job that I recently finished for a simply delightful client!

It's so wonderful when clients trust my colour sense, as through us both working as a team, magic may well result! The results here are wonderful.

Pictured are two works by Canberra design label Schmooks. Claire of Schmooks work is so delicate, playful and intricate, we chose to keep the frames consistent, in a creamy white box frame and to vary the matt colurs, so that each one was separate yet linked together as a whole.

For the pink image we chose a dusty pink outer matt and a warm white inner matt, to tone with the pink in the image and help it to stand out. The other Schmooks print pictured has a background of blue and so we chose to leave the blue alone in the framing and selected very soft matts of warm white outer and salmon pink inner to keep the image soft. These works, although different in colour can now hang happily as a set, linked by their frames.

The other image pictured showed how a childs art can be absolutely elevated with clever framing! A striking child's art piece image in red and purple, was given a fun twist by choosing a red inner matt with a creamy white outer matt and then framing the piece in a funky purple frame- the resulting colour just sings!

Well the move from Dickson to Downer was epic, but it's now complete!

We are now taking bookings for custom framing your beautiful art. We have decided to waive the booking/appointment fee, so give us a call and book your framing in!

The new Rarified is smaller, yet more personal, authentic and creative. Plus, the parking is free and you get Sam's undivided attention and design eye!

Pictured here is one of the two new consult areas, the 'cool colour zone'. It's a great example of what can be done with clever framing and a good hanging system. I would love every landlord in Canberra to install these systems! They leave the wall blemish free and offer great opportunities to display and rotate art collections easily and safely.

Final sale of offcuts and excess stock! I've decided to hold one last sale in the Dickson Rarified space to clear things out at rock bottom prices, to save me moving any more and give you the chance to score a Rarified bargain!!

This Friday 23rd July, I will open the space from 10-12pm, cash only!

The space is rough and dismantled, but the prices are amazing!

It's the last week of Rarified Dickson, before we move!

To put everyone’s mind at rest, I thought I’d put up answers to the questions I’ve been asked over the last few weeks, since announcing the Rarified move. I hope this helps to clarify things.

Are you closing the business?

No, I am not closing Rarified! I am moving it to a home business in Downer, so that I can continue to focus on creating beautiful and personal framing design and craftsmanship for you, without crushing overheads. This will also allow me to open an online shop and to build my new design label- Samitomoto.

Why are you moving?

The world has changed since the financial crisis and the growth of the internet. I see the strong trend continuing of artisan businesses moving online and away from commercial premises, to allow them to grow, reach wider markets and flourish!

When are you moving?

The Dickson Rarified doors close on Saturday 17^th July at 1.30pm. All this last week, all stock is on sale at 25% off the marked price! Come and get a bargain!

Appointments will start at Downer the following Thursday, Friday and Saturday, phone us on 6257 4270 for a booking!

Where are you going to?

I’m moving Rarified to an appointment only home design studio in Downer. Our contact number will stay the same, so once you book an appointment I will email you the address. I look forward to seeing you at the new form of Rarified!

What is your new venture?

My new label Samitomoto is a label of products that help you to develop your creativity and to stay inspired! I am also planning the most beautiful and rare range of ready made frames in the world- also to be sold through Rarified and online and available at select retail boutiques- just a modest little aim!

Phone us on 6257 4270 and book an appointment. Appointments will cost $75 per hour, for design advice, yet once the framing is booked in we will waive the design fee. That way if you just want to engage me for framing design advice- you can and this allows me to honour my design expertise and experience!

Keep Calm and Carry On- Last weeks of Rarified Dickson

It's been lovely to hear from you all, as we enter our last weeks of Rarified Dickson.

The good news is that Rarified is continuing, as a home based picture framing and design studio in Downer!

So, to all those people that have expressed their sadness, thank you, yet please don't be sad, the new form of Rarified will be brighter, more personal and much more creative!

We will still deliver you beautiful framing design, with a high quality finish. You will have the benefit of exclusive one-on one appointments with Sam and the team and you will also get to join the ride as we launch new design products, via the Rarified website. It's going to be great and I'm very excited!

However, we are now entering the last weeks of trading from Dickson. Our last day of trading will be Saturday 17th July. We are still taking framing orders, yet whilst we transition there may be a small delay on completion dates. So take advantage of this time because all prints and framed prints, ready made frames and greeting cards are on sale until we move!

Happy New Year everyone!

Yes, I know it's not that new anymore, yet Canberrans will know that the year proper kicks in once the January coast break is over!

At Rarified we are raring to go into 2010 and have many exciting new projects lined up for this year.

To celebrate the new year, here are two lovely paintings by local artist Karen Green that are currently for sale in the Rarified gallery. Titled 'Sunflyers' and 'If I close my eyes', these paintings are vibrant celebrations of domestic life. You can see and learn more about Karen's work here

'Rarified Draw' Competition terms and conditions

It's on! The Rarified Draw!

We want you all drawing and creating, plus you can win $200 and have your work on the Rarified gallery walls!

This month's theme is 'Summer Dreaming'.

How do I take part?

For full terms and conditions read below;

The Rarified Draw- terms and conditions.

Entry is open to Australian residents.

There is monthly theme to draw, decided by the Rarified team. November ‘09’s theme is ‘Summer Dreaming’.

The theme, plus terms and conditions are to be posted on the Rarified Framing Gallery face book page.

Entries must be created on the matt board postcards supplied by Rarified and stamped with the Rarified Draw stamp, retailing for $2.50 each at Rarified or 10 for ten dollars.

Rarified Draw postcards may also be available to purchase at participating art and craft stores. Art stores please contact Rarified for the postcard wholesale rate.

Entrants must fill in the entry form supplied.

The theme will be announced at the beginning of the month.

Works on the Rarified Draw postcards may be drawings, photographs, collages, or paintings, but must be the original work of the entrant.

The postcards will be displayed pinned or clipped anonymously on the gallery walls and staff members and customers will be invited to vote.

The winner will be decided by popular vote and announced on the last Thursday of the month. The November/December winner will be announced at Rarified on Thursday 10th December from 6.00-7.30pm.

There will be one vote allowed per person.

In the case of a draw, the Rarified team will decide the winner at their own discretion, on the basis of creativity and originality in the interpretation of theme.

The Rarified team members and their families are permitted to enter, but are not eligible for prizes.

The monthly prize may vary, yet will be posted on the Rarified Framing Gallery facebook page and the Rarified blog.

The December prize will be $200.00 cash.

We encourage that the postcards submitted are for sale, with Rarified deducting a 30% commission.

We encourage that postcards not be priced below $50.00. Works that sell will be marked with a red dot and available for collection by the buyer at the end of the month.

Rarified reserves the right not to display or accept works that are considered offensive, racist or overtly sexual in nature.

Entrants accept that their works may be copied for promotional uses and posted on the Rarified blog and face book page.

Entrants who are under eighteen years of age must nominate a guardian to receive their prize.

We asked Claire some questions about her lovely work;

What inspires you in your work?

'Much of my inspiration comes from my little son. I find his innocence both enchanting and fascinating. I sit and watch him talk with his teddy bears and send rockets to the moon while in his imaginary play-land.

I also think there is a deep connection between my work and the happy memories of my own childhood.'

What does your work mean to you?

'Sweet innocence. Playful curiosity. Inquisitive charm. A touch of mischief and light-hearted fun. Enchanting scenarios and endless adventure.

Each illustration has its own story, adding another layer to the work. It also provides the viewer with a more intimate connection to the work.'

How long have you been making art, where do you want to take it in the future?

'I have been illustrating all my life really. From a young age I was always encouraged to be creative and had a strong passion for art. About two years ago I was asked to illustrate a book, it wasn’t until then that I started to take illustrating seriously.
I began with cards, creating personalised gifts for friends and family. From this I developed a series of playful artworks, which are now part of my Schmooks collection.

Schmooks itself is a work in progress. I have been lucky enough to have several stores in Australia stock my work and I would like to extend this overseas at some point. I am looking at working on a series of childrens books in the near future as well as collaborating with a children’s author at the end of this year. The beginning of next year I am looking at exhibiting my work internationally.'

Exhibition- AG Stokes 'Garden:Renewal of Spirit'

Recently we framed beautiful artworks by Ann Stokes for her exhibition, please go along and support this local talent!

Stokes is interested in the way landscape can convey a mood and act as a metaphor for thought and action.

In her words; ‘These current paintings and prints celebrate the continued, if embattled, existence of the suburban garden. The garden hangs on in suburban blocks despite the assaults of drought and global warming and predictions of the demise of the back yard.

The garden is a microcosmic world with shadows as well as light. But here the gardener is Creator and Custodian and every Spring heralds fresh beginnings. A place of solitude and reflection, but also conviviality, rejoicings, discoveries – the garden both mirrors and shapes our mode of life and aspirations.’

This exhibition comprises mainly small works where the idea of an enclosed space is conveyed through a blend of representation and abstraction within a square format. Winding lines and circular forms exemplify the creativity, hope and energy of the gardener-painter.

Both oil paintings and prints derive from Stokes’ intimate knowledge of her garden and surrounds in Turner. The lithographs and solar plate etchings were made during a residency at Megalo Print Studio which Stokes was awarded in 2009.

The exhibition complements the current Floriade display in Canberra and will repay a visit.

'What things think' are a quirky series of cartoon like illustrations, detailing what things think*. They are designed to make you laugh!! Or at least nod knowingly...

This is just the start, we are working on a whole series of these, ultimately be published as a book. Any publishers out there?

Framing Tip- Framing Japanese papers

Japanese papers can look fantastic framed!

Rarified was inspired by a clients choice when framing her Japanese papers and so the team have added some framed decorative papers as Rarified wall stock. Here is a gorgeous decorative piece of Japanese paper, featuring blossoms against a swirly green background. We chose an alphamat luxe gold top matt and teamed it with a cool, apple green inner matt, before finishing the piece off with a waxed asian look black timber frame.Fabulous!

The finished result looks fantastic and is hanging on the Rarified gallery walls as I write, until someone comes to take it home...

Must See- Yoko Yamaguchi's show at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre Gallery!

You all must see Yoko Yamaguchi's show, on at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre Gallery until October 13th 2008! Yoko is Rarified's new trainee framer and a dedicated and talented artist. Her works deal with issues of cultural identity and the work is absolutely stunning in the space. All serious collectors take note, this artwork from an up and coming emerging local artist is so worthy of collection! I'll let Yoko's work do the talking, please go along and see it and support Yoko. Below is Yoko's artist statement from the show, titled; 'Only Me'.

"Name is one of the ways we identify self. Our name goes with us our entire lives, from birth to death. It may even continue after death as a memory. There can be so much feeling, passion, belief and love associated with a name.

Ones name is a very dear thing to most individuals. It is a gift from their family, and everyone has their own. My name is my only treasure. I am eternally grateful for the name my family bestowed upon me; Yoko.

My solo exhibition at Tuggeranong Arts Centre Gallery is including recent of my works which I created in School of Art, and also recent new works. This show provided a good opportunity to get to know myself, and to think about my past experiences and memories one more time. Japan and Australia are two countries that I feel a personal connection with. Each of the keywords I identified as being important to my life (self, family, personal identity, Japanese and Australian culture) opened up feelings and possibilities within my art that I have and will continue to explore. The questions I forced myself to answer regarding my own identity created answers that inspired my art.

One particular aspect I explore in my art is culture. Two different cultures dwell within me at all times, mixing but not quite blending with each other. My formative years were spent immersed in Japanese culture. Who I am now and how I perceive the world owes much to this time. Despite this heavy influence and the deep regard I have for my cultural heritage, I also feel that bit by bit, piece by piece, my identity is being transformed under the influence of Australian life. Ever so subtly I note changes in my way of thinking, my point of view.

Exhibition Murray Kirkland- 'Clouds and Flying Dreams'

'Clouds and Flying Dreams' an exhibition of paintings by artist Murray Kirkland opened at Rarified Friday 15th August at 6.00pm and runs until Wednesday 27th August 2008.

The exhibition features sublime images of clouds, juxtaposed against whimsical paintings of aerial views of the Australian landscape.

In Murray's words;

'I originally started painting clouds as a release from working on the war related work that I have been doing since 1994.

Often people ask how I manage to make them look so peaceful, I guess if they know the other artwork I do, they would understand.

I enjoy the challenge of representing the subtle tones and play of light in clouds, so now rather than a counter to the war related work, clouds have become something I seek out.

I read in a food column in the Sydney Morning Herald a couple of weeks ago, “When was the last time you lay on the grass and watched the clouds?” The author went on to say that the reader probably can’t remember, but I do and I do it as often as possible.

It’s not just painting clouds that works as therapy, you have to take the time to look at them, it’s bit like smelling roses, you should always take the time.

I guess the aim of this exhibition is to show others how I perceive things; I’ve been having flying dreams all my life, a beautiful and exhilarating experience.

Personally I want to encourage people to look up more often, to take the time to
look at clouds, to smell the roses, to slow down.'

The exhibition is on show at the Rarified Framing Gallery until Wednesday 27th August 2008.

Yumi Yumi- alias Aline *Yumi* Yamada is a; 'fine artist and illustrator originally from Brazil. I currently reside in the midwest with my husband and son, where I'm still learning how to cook, garden and keep up with my toddler.'

Using colour to give your framing impact - pink

Recently the Rarified team framed this wonderful original Nina Simone record cover for a special client.

Our client is a big fan of Nina Simone, her music means a lot to her and she wanted to choose a frame that represented Nina's individual style.

Our client's favourite colour is also pink, a happy coincidence, as the use of this musk stick pink frame perfectly compliments the yellow and pink in the record cover design, making for a stand out individual piece!

In her words; 'I love it, the colour is from the era and suits the artist, as she was so unique'.

Framing Medals and Memorabilia

With Anzac day approaching, the Rarified team thought we would share this story with you.

Framing medals and other memorabilia makes a powerful and lasting tribute that honours loved ones, their lives and achievements, whilst allowing every day viewing.

Pictured here is a collection of medals and a photo booked in for framing by a private Rarified client. Here the medals were hand sewn into position, using minimal stitching and no glues. The matt colour chosen, a lovely warm beige, suits the serious and traditional subject matter and helps to 'lift' the metallic tones in the medals.

The personal story here honours; 'Wal- a father, grandfather & great grandfather. In memory of his service in the Great War in France and Belgium'.

Finally, the bronze coloured timber frame compliments the piece and pulls it all together without competing for attention, adding just a hint of metallic sheen.

Vision Boards

Lately I've been talking a lot about goals and values.

Naturally that leads to discussion about vision boards!

Vision boards are wonderful things to create, a strong visual reminder of those goals you working towards and attracting into your life! A well thought out vision board is powerful tool and can lead to great clarity of mind and self awareness.

Rarified custom makes vision boards for clients, in your choice of colour and your choice of frame. How do you know where you are going if you don't define your goals and values and display them in a way that makes you feel great to look at?

My vision board hangs in my study. Keep Calm and Carry On...

You may have seen these great images featuring in modern homes, in recent interiors magazines.

Titled; 'Keep Calm and Carry On', it's a great piece of revisited British propaganda art from WWII.

Of course the poster is now laced with post modern irony, available to purchase in many colours and applicable to any stress inducing situation! The Rarified team thinks it's great!

Rarified has stock in red, pink and aqua blue. Red and pink are currently framed and in the window, selling for $260 each.

Now there is no excuse for feeling less than calm...

Solution to using black matts- when framing travel memorabilia and art

What do you do when you've bought some lovely pieces of art, yet the art looks so heavy by the black card put around it?

If you scroll down, you'll find the first installment to this story...

Poor Ganesh and the Goddess of Knowledge were sadly dampened by the heavy black card around them, when I bought them on holiday in Bali in January.

When changing from black matts, one solution is to go either side of black; either to charcoal grey, or a warm grey/brown with the matt. The darker tone makes the lighter areas of the image stand out and the softer tone helps the artwork to speak and breathe.

On my paintings here, I used a deep warm/grey outer matt and a warm peach cream inner matt. Finally, these lovely paintings were finished off with a dark, carved timber frame, for a rich asian-inspired decorative effect!

It's so exciting to have new artworks on my wall at home! Especially ones that remind me of such a great holiday!

Ideas for framing travel memorabilia and art

I have been lucky enough to have holidayed in one of my favourite parts of the world, Ubud in Bali.

Thank you to all the special Balinese people I met, especially Leroy, Nyoman and Made and a big hello to Francesca!

Bali is one of those special spiritual places that is so friendly and generous with sharing its culture. I especially love Ubud for its emphasis on the arts and culture and for the attention to aesthetics that is evident everywhere.

Whilst there- apart from relaxing, meeting people, eating great food and (joy of joys), keeping a sketch book, I also bought some traditional Balinese paintings from Leroy K Puspa. Above is the before framing image of these paintings, of 'Ganesh' and the 'Goddess of Knowledge'.

Both are exquisitely detailed paintings that are sadly let down by the heavy black card that surrounded them when I bought them. Black is often thought of as a 'neutral framing colour', yet it is a shade that needs to be used sparingly and with caution in the framing process. It can be very heavy and flat and leech the art work of its life and vitality.

Stay tuned for my solution to this problem and how I still use a dark tone (not black) in the framing process that really helps to elevate these two lovely pieces!

Although I feel I've only scratched the surface of this amazing place, my favourites were; lunch, dinner or coffee at the 'Three Monkeys Cafe', A trek through the rice fields for an organic meal set high above the rice fields at 'Organic Sari', chai at 'Cafe Nasi Goreng' and the best service, food and ambience I have EVER encountered at 'Arys Warung'!!

I can't wait to return to this magical land!

It was a couple of days after Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse... Actually, that's not true, Rarified has now re-opened for business and the framers are busy and bustling round the house.

We hope you all have a fabulous and safe New Year!

Here is the Rarified window at present. The David Bromley image is 'Boy in Interior' by Third Drawer Down, limited edition t-towels, featuring images by new and established artists. I love David Bromley's work, in my mind he is an artist that is truly living his authentic creative life. He also has three funky interiors shops called 'A Day on Earth'. This image is an affordable way to purchase his work, whilst you build up to owning an original painting!

Last Minute Christmas Ideas

There are some lovely new pieces on the Rarified Gallery walls. Pictured here is one of a series of three prints by Druvert, called 'Les Bols', published by Nouvelles Images.

This is one of a set of two that Rarified has framed in a matt brushed silver frame, with a soft grey/blue and white matt. Matching the outer matt colour to the neutral blue grey background in these prints allows the stronger blues and pinks in the image to really stand out. This is a very pretty and feminine image and will go quickly, so call Rarified if you would like us to hold it for you.

This is a pencil sketch of a very sweet dog called Morgen, who sadly died recently. She was a very smart kelpie dog and lived a long life! She is much missed.

Cass Rhemrev, who is a talented illustrator and Rarified team member, drew this portrait from photograph for a special client of ours. We then floated the image onto a deep grey/brown matt and framed it in a deep box frame- in natural maple. It looked fantastic and is now a permanent and beautiful tribute to a great dog.

Frame of the Week

The job of the week was framing these gorgeous hats from Vietnam for a fantastic client of ours!

This piece looked stunning when finished, the Rarified team hand sewed the hats onto a lovely soft peach matt and the whole piece went into a deep chocolate brown box frame, lined with soft brick red spacers.

This makes a lovely way to present memorabilia from travels, or anything three dimensional. The best thing about this piece is the way seemingly discordant colours sing when put together as a whole!

This is a section of an image for sale at Rarified called 'The Red Sweater'. It's by the artist Shelli Dorf, who goes under the studio name 'Dazeychic' on etsy.com. We have it framed in a double white matt with a matt silver brushed fame, selling for $195.00. This is a great gift for all the cat lovers out there, it's a seriously cute and curious image.
